    Prediction time.

What do you think will happen with the iPod Touch on 11 July?

    Here's mine:

8GB iPod Touch dropped completely from the product line and the prices modified to:

    16GB iPod Touch: $299
    32GB iPod Touch: $399

    My rationale is this:

    - the 8GB flash drives will be pushed towards iPhone manufacturing, to bolster production.
    - Apple have traditionally only offered two drive sizes of iPod. Dropping the 8GB will rationalise the line.
    - I can get an 8GB iPhone for $199 as of 11 July (yes, yes, yes - we know it'll cost more than that in subscriptions etc. - but it's effectively an iPod Touch for $199)
    - I can get an 8GB Nano for $199

Post your predictions and rationale below.

i think that they will just drop $50. i saw tags in target that had the 8gb for $249 and 16gb for $349. and the appstore will come.

I prefer to say July 11th rather than 11 July.

Many predictions and speculations have been made already, although I am predicting that the iPod touch will stay the same price for at least some time, as I understand the price of the iPhone is cheaper, although we're not talking about the iPhone. The iPod touch's price has to stay consistent with other iPod models including the Nano, Classic and Shuffle and if the iPod touch is lowered, this creates an inconsistenty in the prices.

If the price change happened on 11 July the way I'm predicting, this would be the price options:

    1GB shuffle: $49
    2GB Shuffle: $69
    4GB Nano: $149
    8GB Nano: $199
    80GB Classic: $249
    160GB Classic: $349

    8GB iPhone: $199

16GB Touch: $299 (still more expensive than the 80GB Classic, but cheaper than before)
32GB Touch: $399 (still more expensive than the 160GB Classic, but cheaper than before)

That still keeps consistency in the pricing across the whole line.

That's true. We'll just have to wait and see.

July 11th is the release date for the 3G iPhone and 2.0 software. September is the traditional period when Apple updates iPods, i wouldn't expect anything to change before then, including prices.
