I have a 2nd gen 8gb ipod touch and i connect it to my windows vista computer and in the bottom right a pop up comes and says "usb device not recognized, one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it.

so i figured i could just put it into recovery mode and try to restore... i put it into recovery mode and i clicked "restore" and got a popup that says "software for this ipod is not currently available. make sure you have latest version of itunes and try again"
well i made sure i had latest version of itunes and tried again... same thing happened

If anyone could help me through this, it would be great
    thanks

You have to hold shift and click restore in DFU mode. Then find a firmware on the internet or on your computer and select it for restoring to.

Try to hold the home button while plugging it in then restore.
