Okay hold down the home button while plugged into the computer(make sure iPod is turned off). You should see the "Connect to iTunes screen", iTunes should find the iPod and you will be able to restore it.

i just uninstalled itunes and downloaded the new version. will try your method when it finishes downloading and i reboot the pc.
QUESTION- will your method work even if the itouch does not connect to the computer -the computer shows no sign of anything being plugged in.?

It should. If not you can always use DFU Mode.

i have tried the whole dfu mode thing and i cant get into it .
basically i hold down(while itouch is off) the sleep and home button for 10 seconds-in that process initially i get the apple screen then it shuts off , then just about 9.5 seconds the apple logo apperas again and i let go the home button and it just goes into the normal connect to itunes creen....
