I just received an iPod touch 16GB as gift. I am not sure if it is 2nd generation (the box doesn't say 2nd gen). It says version 1.1.4 (4A102). Also it is used, I don't know if it is already jailbroken. How do I check whether is is done with jailbreak so that I don't have to do it myself.

Well if it has 1.1.4 then its obviously a 1G, and if it DOESN'T have volume buttons then it's a 1G.
I would go for updating the iPod the iPod to 2.2, 1.1.4 is too old.

Since it is used, it might be pre-jailbroken by the previous owner... Is there a way to find it out?

If it doesn't have cydia/installer... Its not jailbroke...
    YOU CANNOT BRICK YOUR IPOD
    ITS IMPOSSIBLE!
Update to 2.2, It doesn't really affect jailbreak ability!

actually there are always ways to brick it, very specific tho, like unplugging it while is jailbreak = bricked ipod.

Also...i thought all ipods now come with 2.0
