Guide for SSHing and Syncing an iPod touch on Ubuntu

    A. Things you will need:

    1. Computer running Ubuntu 8.10 or 8.04
    2. Jailbroken iPod touch 1G or 2G with OpenSSH installed
    3. Working Wireless network

    B. SSH

    1. Go to "Places", then select "Network"

    2. Double-Click "iPod touch"

    3. If this is your first SSH, then this screen will pop up. Just click "Log In Anyway."

    4. The next screen will ask you for your username and password. The username will be "root" and the password will be "alpine" unless you changed it.

    5. Voila! You are in the filesystem! If you want to make it more like WinSCP, you can change the left panel from "Icon View" to "List View"

    C. Sync

Preface: You must have SSH working to use Syncing.

    1. Open up Synaptic and download "ipod-convenience". Download the first one at the top.

    2. Type
    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/default/ipod-convenience
in terminal. Tell it your password and you should see a screen open up.

    3. Once at this screen, change the IP address to the IP address that your iPod touch is using. Check this by opening "settings" then "Wi-Fi" then click the clue arrow next to your network name and the IP Address is the first number.

    4. Open your terminal back up and type
    Code:
    ipod-touch-mount
It should ask you for your password (in my case twice) but then an icon called "Ipod" should appear on your Desktop.

    5. Now go to "Sound and Video" then "gtkpod"

    6. If it asks you which type of device you have, pick the 8gig for 1st gen and 16gig for 2nd gen. (Can someone post a screenshot of this, mine won't show back up

Please Register or Log in to view images

    ).

    7. Now click "iPod Touch" and click "Add Folder". Open the folder with the music that you want to sync, and click "Save Changes."

    8. Be patient, this can take a long time. Sometimes, Ubuntu will think that gtkpod has gone inactive and the screen will turn darker, but it will still be working.

    9. Enjoy the full music collection on your ipod!

Please post problems and I will try to set up a troubleshooting section in the future.
