I have an iPod touch 8GB model MC086LL and I am running windows vista. I have head mixed messages around the web but I was told this is a reliable site. I have tried the blackra1n rc3 and all it does after i click make it rain is open itunes and my ipod shows the usb and itunes icon. I have tried many many times with the same results. Some people say that they have done it with blackra1n rc2 others say it can't be jailbroken yet. please help me.

When you get that screen, just close blackra1n, run it (again), and press 'make it ra1n' (again). This is because the jailbreak is tethered, so whenever you turn off your iPod, you'll need to run blackra1n again to turn it back on.

so basically you need to run it each time you boot up?

Is there any other jailbreak for 3g?

Nope, blackra1n is the only one.

Unplug it, close blackra1n, plug it back, and try again. Just keep trying.

Well I'm assuming that the backup is a nonjailbroken backup.. so if you do restore from that, then it won't be jailbroken anymore. Then you'll have to jailbreak again.
