    3G iPod touch
Hi. My brother is in the military and is getting re-deployed in a few weeks. I got him an iPod Touch as a christmas gift, to kill time and maybe used it for some voip if he has a decent wi-fi connection.

Given a $200 price limit, I ended up going with the 3rd gen 8G touch instead of a 16G 2nd gen refurb for the same price. I had read about speed/cpu improvements in the 3G, and a quick google said it had been jailbroken as well... but I read enough to see that it was a tethered jailbreak.

Now I read that the 8GB 3rd gen Touch isn't really a 3rd gen... at least it does not have the CPU upgrades? My questions are...

    1) Is the tethering requirement a 3rd-gen issue, or is it the 3.1 firmware?

    2) If I get a 2nd-gen refurb from Apple, will it also have to be tethered if it ships with 3.1 OS?

    Thanks for any info!

the speed and cpu improvements are only with the 32gb and 64gb 3g. A 3g 8gb is exactly the same as a 2g 8gb.
other than that i dont know what tethering or filmware, im more of a features girl other than a techie
