I tried to use the new 4.0 firmware, didnt work. long story. it gets stuck in a loop where it tries to start up but crashes. i tried to do a shift-restore back to 3.1.3, but i get error 3194. apparently that means apple doesnt sign for 3.1.3 anymore. any help is greatly appreciated.

Try restoring to 4.0 on a different user account and a different USB port.

Something similar happened to me today! I was too lazy to wait for the official release, so I downloaded the firmware from somewhere else. Being that said, I did a sh*tf+Restore restore but didn't work (this was on iTunes 9.1). I tried to restore back to 3.1.3 but the progress bar got stuck a few milimiters from completition. Anyway, I downloaded iTunes 9.2 and used the same firmware I had downloaded previously and it worked just fine.

Maybe that will help you, good luck man, I know how you feel!

Well, if you actually download iOS4 on 9.1 (official apple thingie) you will only get a message saying that iTunes 9.2 is required to use the device, but it wouldn't be bricked. I came across that today in one of my various fails.

If you are still having problems, read the guide I wrote about how to fix this

i have iTunes 9.2, but do they really not sign for 3.1.3 anymore? but what happens is i use the iOS 4.0 and restore my ipod, it does its thing and then the little message comes up saying "your ipod has been returned to factory settings. do not disconnect your ipod. your ipod will start up and appear in the itunes window." but the problem is that it never starts up. the apple logo stays on the screen and then the screen "blinks", as it would when you do a force-turn off. im thinking i might even have to wait till a new update comes out or i would have to send in my ipod to get a replacement.
