My iPod touch 2ng gen 16gb screen stopped working about a week ago. The screen works for about 3 seconds and then goes white/gray and has these weird bands that run down it. I am able to see the unlock screen but by the time I unlock and get to the home screen the screen dies. Same thing happens when I restart it. I see the apple logo for about 3 seconds before screen dies.

The digitizer still works but the lcd screen goes gray..

I tried restoring via iTunes to latest OS and still have the same issue.

I called Apple and they don't know about this issue..

Here is a picture of what happens to the screen after 3 seconds.

it could possibly be a small rip in the lcd cable (did u drop the ipod at all or get it wet)?

I definitely did NOT get it wet. I have dropped it a few times but nothing major. It did not start happening after I dropped it though. Should I take it apart? I wont have any luck with apple right? No known manufacturing issues?

I have replaced a glass digitizer on a different iPod touch before so I know how to take it apart.

Well, I wouldn't suggest taking it apart unless your warranty is up, I do Home repairs for my local cities so I just suggest being careful you can crack your digitizer if you incorrectly remove your digitizer its happen to me b4, but if you do have warranty still I would suggest trying to get them to send let you send it so they can repair it.

Well if you want to try a new lcd they are cheap on eBay thats where I buy my products from to fix iPods they have the best prices on there you cant surely get one for under $20 and the tool kit for like $10 or less.

The LCD is fairly simple to replace,

    1. You need to remove the digitizer
    2. then lift the lcd (its held down with Adhesive)
    3. Un-screw all the little screws under the lcd
    4. The battery is under neath this metal plate lift the plate up
    5. The lcd cable runs under the metal plate just unplug it and then it will come out.

Here is the repair guide to replacing the lcd:
