I'm going to upgrade from my iPod touch first generation to a second gen or third gen, but I can decide which. Some people like the second and some like the third better. What are te true differences between the two different gens? I would also like to know if the battery on either iPod is sodered in, if one of the generations isn't I want that one.

If you're planning to get an 8gb, go for the 2nd gen, because the '3rd gen' basically has the same hardware. But the 3rd gen 32 and 64gb models have more RAM, a faster processor and can support better graphics. If you don't mind spending the extra cash for a 32/64gb model, go for the 3rd gen.

Then I recommend a 3rd gen. It's a lot better in the long run, especially since Apple probably won't be support 2nd gen devices in future firmware updates.

That.. I wouldn't know. I don't think they are soldered in because I know you can replace them. But opening the iPod up is a real pain in the ass.

Aparts from the same storage capacity:

3rd Gen 32GB: Does have a faster CPU, Does have twice as much ram, Does have a better GPU with enhanced 3d support, Does allow voice control, Does allow multitasking under OS4.0

    2nd Gen 32GB: Doesn't.

AS for battery replacement, theres plenty of tear downs online to see whats involved in a replacement.

They arent soldered, but they arent user-replacable either.

EDIT: just so it isnt a double post...

i Recommend you get the 3rd Gen. and just to be clear, all 8GB iPod's are still 2G's. if you plan on using 4.0, get a 3G, because the 2G on 4.0 is slow like sh*t.
