Any microphone input device will work in the 3.5 jack. If you add the microphone, I suggest you download TouchMod's VoIP for free international (I believe) calls.

I'm confused. you just tool a picture of the apple in-ear headphones with a mic and compared them to the standard apple headphones...?

EDIT: touchmods hasnt released an appstore app though, for VOIP calls on a 2nd gen touch you need fring (free)

    Griffin Smartalk

Has anyone tried the Griffin Smartalk? It appears to be an adapter that lets you have a mic and remote with any earbuds headphones that you want. Looks cool and can be found around the web and on eBay for around $15.

Yes, I've used the Griffin SmartTalk with my 2G Touch and it works quite well. So far I've only tested it with fring (using Skype) but I plan to try it with midomi later today.

If you're listening to music the button on the microphone piece acts as a pause/play toggle.

Most likely. As long as it's a one cord microphone ( like the iPhone's remote/mic/earphone)

    Dear Abby,

I have been wondering about this: at another forum two people have said they are using "fring" and a Skype account. One said he called his contact and the phone rang, but his friend could not hear his voice. Another one said, I use this one http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA814LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1MA&mco=MTI5OTQwOQ with "fring" and it worked.

I asked, is it VOIP? I had already asked, do you need a special SIP other than the Skype suggested SIP? I am awaiting answers.

One said, use this: http://www.apple.com/ipod/inearheadphones/ but it states:
I don't have extra money lying around, so could the experienced folks here tell me am I dreaming "fring" "IM+ Skype for iPhone" a SIP that supports VOIP and the "right stuff" earphones and mic are going to allow VOIP on my iTouch 2G?

I thought it would because I saw the video of Steve Jobs talking into his iTouch 2G, explaining the iTouch 2G has internet. I thought, I can have VOIP.

I already have a cheapie prepaid AT&T/Cingular cell phone, that has practically no rural coverage where-I-am-and-where-I-mostly-go, but there is WiFi practically everywhere I go. Well, at least in the nearby rural towns.

I got the PDF using the laptop at the "fring" website: Support>"User Guide - iPhone", "fring 1.0.4 user guide", "Download".

    In "Troubleshooting" it was stated:
That was probably too much information.

But I think people in my situation are a "market" Apple-wisdom has hitherto not considered. The iTouch pricing is reachable by nearly everyone. I think Apple need to realize there is another huge market, and that market is iTouch VOIP.

That said, I also think a large market share for Apple is very "tech savvy" and Apple ought to allow Jailbreak and the other apps required to be "legitimate" for all their "tech savvy" customers.

After all, Eee PC allows their customers to go behind the "front desktop" and into Xandros Linux: very cool.

Anyway, for the "hard-headed and long-winded" hiding behind sunglasses I would like to know what works: fring, IM+ Skype for iPhone, the "right stuff" SIP, and what earphones with microphone?

If I use http://www.ifans.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=29797&d=1224088423 what earphone with mic will work? and is it still fring, IM+ Skype for iPhone, the "right stuff" SIP, and what earphones with microphone?

    signed confused in California.
