Firstly sorry if this is the wrong section.
Im running on a iPod touch 2g MC model 4.1
The problem im having is I cant downgrade from IOS 4.1 to 4.0 or below....
ive read about opening up the hosts but when I open it in notepad through administrator all I get is this:

    ## Copyright (c) 1993-2001 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This file has been automatically generated for use by Microsoft Internet
    # Connection Sharing. It contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names
    # for the home network. Please do not make changes to the HOSTS.ICS file.
    # Any changes may result in a loss of connectivity between machines on the
    # local network.

    Is that correct?
Now i downloaded tinyumbrella 4.1.10 and when it opens it says:
    Cannot start TSS Service
DO NOT TRY RESTORING YOUR DEVICE!!
    C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts is not writable!

But when i click ok to that box it says all saved SHSHs
    iPod2g 4.0
    iPod2g 4.0.2
    iPod2g 4.1

I have tried putting my iPod into DFU and recovery mode and using Shift+Restore and got the error message when i try.....
I got my firmware from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ and double checked it was the IOS 4.0 firware that i was trying to downgrade to
I also tried 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 and no luck with any of them.
Any help would be much aprreciated
    Thank you

Well you couldn't until very recently. I just jail-broke mine with total success. Some say they have an issue with battery life/wifi not working but the solution is to just to jailbreak it AGAIN and apparently that fixes those issues.
