Recently I updated my iPod's firmware from 2.x to 3.0 and a few days ago to 3.1. But I discovered there's some dust under my screen, so I'm planning to bring it to an official apple store, since I still have a warranty that lasts a week or two. But now I'm concerned; since I never paid for my IPSW, I'm afraid they may see it as an illegal version. An illegal IPSW is against the rules, so it's possible my warrenty isn't valid anymore. I downloaded it via iTunes, and it isn't jailbroken. I always thought an upgrade would cost me 10$...

So basicly the main question is: Is it possible for apple to make my warrenty invalid, only because the software may be illegal, even if it isn't jailbroken? Or do they only take away your warranty if it's jailbroken. Or in other words: is an IPSW downloaded via iTunes always legal? I really don't want to mess things up with my iPod.

Oh yeah, I'm hoping they'll give me a 'new' refund or something like that. Any chances?

you really should have just paid for it, but to help you can restore it before you return it. itunes will autimatically download the latest version in your name...

Apple doesn't protect their firmware at all so they can't tell.

Nobody really read it did they, all firmwares from iTunes are legal, if they didn't make you pay its their fault, not yours, and also, it's not protected, there's no way they can find out...

your good, theres no way they can tell, your method of download was completely legay, in fact the only reason apple charges for their software updates is because they are required to by law

    Dust under the screen

Get back with the info of whether you got a refund /replace for dust under the screen. It would be sick to get an upgrade on that account.

If you have a few weeks left on the warranty then you've had it for 11 months, I've got an extended store warranty and noticed dust under the screen.

PS I concur you are good to return with any non jailbroken FW.
