ok first off, the guy said he had a 2g ipod touch. so in this case, it really doesn't matter. u can't jailbreak it yet. but! if i understand correctly, if they find an exploit and upload the unsigned files and crap like they did with ipwn and quickpwn, it won't matter what firmware u use, because its a hardware/processor thing, not a firmware issue. so for the time being, go ahead and update to 2.2, its actually a bit btr, and when the jailbreak comes out, they should make it for the current firmware, or the one just before it. and yes u can go back to the old firmware.

the jailbreak requires that u put ur ipod in DFU, or recovery mode. that just like when u first get it, and it tells u to plug into itunes, but there may be a few differences. i think that DFU mode is when the exploit has been... exploited and u can put the custom firmware on the ipod... but anyways. when the ipod is in DFU mode, all u have to do is do a shift+restore in itunes, select the firmware, and bang. ur done.

    hope that helped

    Oh, No! Update to 2.2!
I thought you wanted to jailbreak it (didn't see 2g)
You can't jailbreak 2nd gen, So update. 2.1 is only more stable for a jailbreak i think
