I have 1G Itouch, which was upgraded to apples 2.2.1 update then jail broken. After that i made a grave mistake of installing OS3 beta 4 update and Itouch presented me with a a purple screen of death. i.e. the Recovery mode screen with pink background. (I dont have a developer account and Itunes never prompted me for UUID or anything like this..)

Since then I have tried the following.

downgrading itunes from 8.2 to 8.1
following this i have tried almost all the apple firmwares by holding down the shift key, with control key, by putting itouch in DFU mode .. etc. After each update the screen shows the recovery mode and itunes days .. i must restore this ipod.

I have tried updating the itouch to the latest beta 5 update no joy (PSOD)
I have tried using QuickPWN it doesnt detects my itouch.
I have tried a program called irecovery... i don't get the white screen bit so i guess it hasnt worked on 1st Gen itouch.
Ziphone doesnt detects itouch in recovery or DFU mode
Voltage doesnt seems to do anything apart from rebooting it
    redsn0w doesn't works either
I have tried to uninstall usb devices and redetecting drivers, doesn't works.
    I have tried changing computers..
I have contacted apple..they say... there is no warranty so they cant do anything.. repair or replacement will cost £116 pounds which i obviously cant afford ..

I am out of options .. since i can not use any mac applications and the window based solutions are not seem to be helping..

    Please help!!!
    Sam

PS: I have posted a zip file of about 15 logs in a file below

In the eventvwr i also observe the following

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( iPod Service ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service started.

    C:\Documents and Settings\test\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\Device Support
Device support folder has a file with the following name in there
    x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw

Did you completely uninstalled Apple Mobile Device Support when downgrading iTunes? It's a bit different between 8.1 and 8.2, so may be incompatible.

They say you need to find another PC and try restoring on it (found here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8511464).

Also, error 31 means "device is not functioning".
You could try completely wiping installed device from system along with drivers.
Then uninstall iTunes and all its components (especially Apple Mobile Device Support).
Remove apple driver info (delete key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\USBAAPL) if exists.
Remove apple mobile device service info (delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Apple Mobile Device) if exists.
Remove iPod service (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iPod Service) if exists.
Remove all iPod-related registry keys (all keys from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB starting with "VID_05CA", that's Apple).
    Reboot.
Then reinstall iTunes and try restoring. Anyway, you lose nothing.

    I had this problem too

make sure you have latest itunes
always do dfu mode when you do htis
    download an older firmware
and keep trying restart your comp for each try

it took me a week of repeated trials but it worked
