I recently upgraded to a 16GB refurb iPod touch 2nd generation, since it was a great deal at $200 on the Apple site!

Unfortunately that's where all the fun ended.
When I got my iPod, hooked it up to iTunes (by the way I have version 9.0) and bought the new 3.1.1 firmware from Apple. I put the software successfully on the iPod and starting play around with 3.1.1 a little bit till...wham! It suddenly just crashed and then the "connect to itunes" logo appeared. So I connected to iTunes, attempted to restore, and got an error message saying: "an unknown error occurred (9)".
I am currently running Windows Vista if you would also like to know.
Please help if you can! I got really excited over this and now I'm stuck trying to figure out what's wrong....plus I don't exactly want to make a trip down to the Genius Bar, just yet.

I already tried putting it into DFU mode already, but thanks anyway.
I wonder if it's anything to have to do with the apple logo appearing and then the "connect to itunes" logo appearing after that...? Just noticed this.

that sucks. they may have sent you a defective ipod.... you'll probably have to send it back or take it to an apple store if you have one close by.

Well I gave Apple customer service a call and I set up a genius bar appointment, hopefully I can either get it replaced or repaired. Keeping my fingers crossed.

2.2.1, but I successfully upgraded it to 3.1.1 and started testing out the new firmware, then my iPod crashed for good and when I tried to restore I got the error message.

Yup, I've done it many times before, so I'm almost 100% sure that I didn't make any mistakes...

no offense but i can probably bet 1000 bucks that you didnt because if it was in true dfu the screen would be black and the apple/restore logos would not appear

    DFU:
    Plug into itunes
Hold home and power for EXACTLY 10 seconds (use a timer or something)
Release Power and continue to hold home until computer recognizes ipot (screen will still remain black)
