I've searched google, this forum, and all corners of the globe, and have still found no answer.

I have a 1st generation ipod touch, not jailbroken or anything, and it started acting up. Well, I decided to throw it into DFU mode and it's not coming out. I get the same old error "the ipod 'ipod' could not be restored..." with a sequence of numbers depending on how I try to restore it. 1611 if I try 3.0 or clicking restore without shift, 20 if I shift-click and try the original firmware, etc. Here is a list of all that I've tried so far -

restoring it with a whole host of different firmwares.

putting it in DFU mode again and again and again.

    Jawcl's fix.

    re-installing itunes

    trying it on different computers,

    etc.

What can I do? I'm at my wits end. I'm pretty sure if I phone up apple and ask them to replace a two-year-old ipod they'll laugh in my face.

Have you tried taking the ipod out of DFU mode my holding the power and home button for about 30 seconds?

No. What exactly does that do? I thought DFU mode was kind of a one way thing

It forces the ipod to turn off. You can also do this if the iPod freezes at any stage to get it to turn off.
