I use CuteFTP because that's the program that the iPod jailbreaker instructions recommended. I followed the instructions to the punctuation about the username and password and all of that, I connect my iPod via USB and then go went through and copied the iPod's IP Address into CuteFTP and entered the Username and Password and set it to port 21, but it refuses to connect each time I hit connect. It just gives me an error message saying:

The Connection failed sue to an error or timeout.
    1) Please verify that the destination host name or IP address is correct
    2) Increase the connection timeout threshold under Global Settings | Connection.
    3) Switch to the opposite data connection type (PASV or PORT) under Site Settings | Type tab.

Now, I have no experience with any FTP clients prior to this, so if I am doing anything wrong, please tell me.

Sorry if this is a stupid mistake or anything.

Edit: Alright, I have tried a 2nd time to connect to the FTP Client. This time, though, I got a different error message:

The remote host actively refused the attempt to connect to it.
    1) Please verify that the destination host name or IP address is correct.
    2) Verify that the connection port number is correct (under Site Settings | Type tab).
    3) The remote server may be temporarily or permanently inaccessible (try again later).
    4) Verify that you have chosen the right protocol (SSH2, SSL, FTP, etc.) and have setup all required options for that protocol.

The protocol you are using should be SFTP and it should automatically change the port to 22.

    User: root
    Pass: alpine

Alright, I am just going to set up a new connection to the ipod altogether. Here is what the new connection window says. Do I need to change any of these options:

    Protocol Type :
    FTP (Standard File Tranfer Protocol)

    Server Type: Port:
    Auto-Detect 22

    Data Connection Type:
    Use Global Settings

    Transfer Type:
    Use Global Setting

    Server Time Zone:
    No Offset

It should be SFTP not FTP.

    ........?

Hmm....SFTP is not an option in the list. THe list displays the following:

    FTP (Standard File Transfer Protocol)
    FTP with TLS/SSL (Port 990 - Implicit)
FTP with SSL (AUTH SSL - Explicit)
FTP with TLS/SSL (AUTH SSL - Explicit)

Try using WinSCP. As for CuteFTP, is yours the Pro version? Because only the Pro version can SSH into the iPod, from what I remember. WinSCP is free.

I am using CuteFTPpro , and getting these kind of errors:

Connecting to SFTP server... {IP} (ip = {IP})...
    Connection closed by remote host.
The requested operation failed for an unknown reason.
    Can't connect to {IP}. SFTP21 error = #4.
    SFTP21 connection closed.

Connecting to SFTP server... {IP} (ip = {IP})...
The file being transferred in ASCII mode appears to be a Binary file. Proceed anyway?
    Can't connect to {IP}. SFTP21 error = #0.
    SFTP21 connection closed.

    SSH is turned on.
    Wi-Fi is connected.
    Ipod is connected right.
    tried port 21/22
    username root
passwd : alpine (tried that other one too, forgot it already)
    IP is good.
i had this problem before after resetting/updating firmware (trough Itunes).
after that i found a solution , a very simple one , but i can't find it anymore

The only thing I can help you with, is
ensure that you have OpenSSH installed
Not just bossprefs turning SSH on.
If that doesn't do it, make sure that you have both devices on the same connection.
