When I try to restore, it doesn't give me a choice to restore only.
Instead it makes me restore and update. But when I updte it says my device isn't eligible. I've tried running spirit again too, it doesn't detect my iPod.

I've also held home and sleep button, and then when the apple logo appears, I let go of the sleep button, and continue holding home.

Nothing has worked so far. Right now it is at the plug into itunes screen, and wants me to update, but that doesn't work.

Did you try recovery mode in iPod?
Hold down Home and Power button until the apple logo shows twice.
The second time it shows, release after a good 3-4 seconds.
Then it should be in recovery mode.
    Try that.
    And tell me what happens.

    Ok now.
What version of iTunes do you have?
    And try clicking restore.
Do you have the firmware for the iOS 4.
    The ipsw?
If not, then I don't know what to tell you buddy.

I don't know what version I have for iTunes, but it's not the latest one.

I do have the iOs4 downloaded, but I can't update because I don't have the latest version. I get an error.

    Ok.
Open iTunes and go to Help, then About iTunes.
Tell me what version your on.
Then go to Apple.com and download the latest version of iTunes.
Remove you old version of iTunes first.
When the download is complete, install.
If it asks you about a new update or if the update begins automatically for your iPod, cancel it.
When you do that, you have a new version of iTunes and press Shift+Restore and look the 4.0 ipsw for your iPod.
If you still occur with problems let me know right away.

    Ok.
    Remove that version of iTunes.
    You should know how to.
Then download the latest version of iTunes at apple.com

I got the newest version of iTunes, and restored and updated my iPod.

After it OS was finished downloading nothing happened.
