Today I was listening to music and reading through some rss feeds via an app store app. After that my iPod started lagging so I hit home. Then my music started skipping and it was fully frozen I tried turning it off but it didn't work then 5 minutes later when I took it back out it was restarted. My questions are:

    1)Could my jailbreak cause that?

    2)Could the app cause that?

    3)If neither what could have?

4)Is this expected to happen again?

    5) What can I do to prevent this from happening if it could happen again?

The only thing I can think of is that you ran out of run time memory...
try using one of the free memory programs(I dont mean there free I mean they free your memory.) Also a free alternitive is just to reboot your ipod every know and then.

Free Memory 1.4. It's only a dollar and it works really well

Ok, I'll try that app and me running out of runtime memory could cause a freeze up and crash?
