I just get my iPod Touch 2G 8GB today.
    I unboxed it.
    Then got it.
    Pressed the sleep/wake button.
Doesn't like to turn on. (even if I hold it long)

Plugged it to comp. nothing happened even if I pressed the sleep/wake button
    when plugged.

Time for a trip to the Apple Store.
I'm going today cos my 2G has done the exact same thing. Computer just doesn't think it exists.
Although mine was fine for a while.

It sucks that your new "toy" doesn't work, but at least you can change it without any problems, since it's new

You say you're going to bring it to an Apple Store, but did both of you have iTunes 8 installed?

you do not need itunes for it, since you can use wall chargers, even not ipod specific chargers, but i have heard of this, and people say when they would hold the home/sleep button at the same time for a while, it would work for them

Try DFU restore (google is your friend) or you may have to take another trip to Apple.
