After I upgraded some apps via cydia, i was prompted to restart the springboard so I did. After it seemed to be successfully restarted and the screen appeared where the slider is that says "slide to unlock". So I unlocked it but when it got to the spring board, no icons were displayed, just my wallpaper and that bar on the top that displays the time, battery, etc. I have a 1st gen iPod touch with v2.0 jailbroken firmware. If anyone can help me with this problem, I really appreciate it.

Note: I do not want to restore the iPod to orignial factory settings unless if there is absolutely no other alternative to fixing this problem. I have spent a lot of time customizing my iPod to my needs and do not want to have to do that over again.

Hmm, well try rebooting it. And what did you install?
This happened to me in 1.1.x and well, I had to restore. :/

I tried rebooting already and I think I installed some 2.2 firmware notification fix or something like that. Anyway I ended up restoring the iPod. Thanks for your help =D
