Well, today I woke up and my 2 and a half year old was f***ed. When I put it up straight it goes into landscape and vise versa when I tilt it to its side the screen goes straight up. Im pretty well screwed arnt I?

It could either be a Hardware or a Firmware problem.
Try a DFU restore. DFU solves everything, because if it was jailbroken it could just have been messed with by a new install.

DFU solves MOST things.. Like this problem, I had my 2nd gen for about 2 weeks then the volume rocker started messing up by becoming the sleep/wake button and locking my ipod.. I thought ok restart it and all will be good but it wasn't. So I decided to DFU restore it and figured this will fix it but again it didn't do anything but make me wait there for 15 minutes to have my iPod restore.. Alot of hardware problems like this are hardware problems not software problems and need to be dealt with by a technician. Sorry to say but it's the sad truth...
