I hope this question is not entirely stupid.. Is it possible to use an old iPod 5G as an external HD? I am planning to use it with time machine.. is it possible? My iPod is 30GB it's not a lot but I could probably back up my most important files? Right? Dont be too arsh with me.. Ive never used a mac before..

    probably not
since your hard drive must have more storage than your computer storage

    ex. computer- 120 gigs
    hard drive- 120 + gigs

Time Machine only backs up to drives that are formatted as HFSJ+. I tried using my old iPod as that, even formatted it with Disk Utility. But something in the hardware makes it always identify as an iPod. Which you cannot use with Time Machine.

THOUGH. There are alternatives to Time Machine which MAY work with your iPod. One I can think of, but never tried, is: http://www.pol-online.net/mathusalem

Would you really want an iPod plugged into your computer ALL the time?
Just buy an external HD, they're getting cheaper and cheaper.
