My iphone turns on only when i plug the usb cord into it. After that it'll stay on for about 4 sec. then the screen slowly fades off. I can get it into restore mode and it'll stay on that screen, but once iTunes starts the restore process it turns off. Any ideas?

No need to be a smart ass. Even if I told you, you wouldn't believe me. but i might as well say it anyways. My iphone does NOT go into DFU mode. Thats why I think this is some kind of hardware failure

Hmm i think its a software issue. If its goes into recovery mode and stays there just until you start the restore process then i think its a software issue. Can you unlock the phone? Have you installed anything lately that might have caused it? I know of one JB thing but i cant talk about it, think stealing stuff. Try letting it run down till its dead and charging it all the way up and yeah.

No i mean unlock as in the "slide to unlock" thing on the lock screen. Oh and check for water damage. There is a water sensor at the bottom of the headphone jack and one under the dock connector.

Go figure a way yourself then. I was only trying to help.

FYI: DFU always works. (unless your having a hardware issue, maybe)

DFU mode = Restore device from any state.

Yep, DFU works always, it is written to be a last resort.
Try the helper in Redsn0w, you aren't doing it right.
