Ive searched and i keep getting conflicting answers. Some say its possible to get an iphone and use it as an itouch without getting a contract and some say the only way to use anything on the iphone is with a 2 year contract with att.

Is there a way to get an iphone and use it without a contract?? If so how?

It would essentially be an itouch but with bluetooth, camera, external control buttons, etc.

Yes you can, look in marketplace in here, and you might find an unlocked one, if not try ebay!

You can "unlock" every iPhone atm!
So if you buy the new 16GB one for example, it will come with 1.1.3 ootb (out of the box).
To unlock I suggest using this... But be sure to make what EXACTLY stands there, and be sure to know what baseband and so on is.

    dude go here:

    http://iclarified.com/entries/index.php?caid=2&scid=11

and it will teach you how to unlock it (even if you have a brand new one from apple. like a 16 gig) also what unlocking does is alow you to use the phone for any sim card companys such as cingular, att, tmobile, or rogers. so like if you have att all ready then just unlock it, put ur sim card in it and you will be able to use it and not have to but a new plan. pm with any questions

i have a question about the price listed on apple.com. is the 399 price for the 8 gig with a two year at&t contract? or do you pay more if you don't sign up? i'm thinking of going down to the states from canada to pick one up. so is the iphone a different price if you dont sign up with att?

Nope, no difference if not activating it.
