i know that this has probably come up a couple of times, or at least been on some people's minds as a thought
but i think it would be pretty cool to get a fully-functional firmware running on the iPhone simulator, or have a new simulator made so you don't have to frig around with apple's
this could be a good tool for developers, as they'd be be able to test for bugs and things
and i know you can do that with app store apps, but this would be for all the rest, such as those developing springboard plug-ins and such
after all, better to crash a simulator than your iphone, right?
i'm not exactly sure what creating or modding the current simulator would entail, so i'm not saying in any way that i'd be able to do this or even contribute
i think it would be a big contribution to many people however and think its worth a shot

erm.... don't tell anyone, but a lot of devs use the SDK to write their apps. They test them in the simulator too.

    shhhh

But seriously, I think that it's a poor idea. Why beef up a simulator when you have the real device in your hand?

Well you might have just written something that kills your iPod.

    Ok, show me.

It's going to be damn hard to write anything in the userland that will brick anything. The iPod would most likely not be bricked anyway, but even the iPhone's communications processor wouldn't be bricked from the userland very easily. Unless it were something that delt specifically with the boot environment such as LogoMe... if it were, you wouldn't be trying it on the simulator.

Which, if you haven't noticed, is even worse.

I don't know much about this, but could the simulator kill your entire computer?
Wouldn't it just shut the window or something?

the only way i know of it killing your phone is eating your file tree. so if it did that in simulator it'd be a nice little reformat for you
