i haven't been into iphone or ipod touch JB for awhile ever since i traded them both in. But recently my father has been planning on getting a iPhone 3G and i have a few questions i wish to clarify.

-When you jailbreak the iphone, you essentially 'unlock' the iphone to use any GSM and carrier, right? Someone told my dad they are 2 different things, and from what i knew before, when you jailbreak it, you unlock it, too.

-Is the latest jailbreak-able firmware for Iphone 3G 3.1.2?

-If so, which software is recommended for this? I remember using Blackra1n for my ipod and Winpwn for iphone, but im not sure if they have been keeping it up on jailbreaking.

-Lastly, is jailbreaking the 3G an 3GS one and the same? If not, whats different about them?

You can chose weather or not to unlock it. It won't be unlocked unless you run a program.

If your dad gets an MC modle 3g then it'll be tethered and might not be jailbroken. If it's on 3.1.3. 3.1.2 is jailbroken.

    Blackra1n.

    3G is faster. http://www.apple.com/ca/iphone/iphone-3gs/

    All 3g iphones are untethered.

@Tkf1, can you elaborate on what you mean when you say "MC" model?
also, i assume you can use Blackra1n to jailbreak AND unlock the iphone?

@austers. All the firmware jailbreaks are also untethered?
