If I were to buy an 3g iPhone off the apple site, then I jailbroke it, would I be able to use it without signing a contract with any company? If I were to buy an iPhone and activate it through rogers or whoever, I would be paying through the ass from all the browsing I would be doing on it.

So if I unlock it what can I do with it?

why dont people understand this... you cannot just buy an iPhone 3g..if you go to an apple store, they activate it there.. if you go to a cell phone provider they activate it there... again I say, you CANNOT just got to a store and buy the iPhone 3g

Just wondering; some people said that they went to the Apple Store, bought an iPhone and were told to activate it at home by themselves. Are these just freak occurences? It's nothing that's supposed to happen right?

I think you might be mistaken.
At the moment you cant buy it unlocked, the only time you can buy it without a contract is if you know someone who sells them but the iphone will still be locked to a network, in Australia for me, my friend works in an Apple store, he can buy them without a contract, but they are still locked in with Telstra.

Now, with the activation thing, activating it like the sometimes do in the store for you, means your just plug in into your computer and register your itunes account with it, sometimes they do it instore, sometimes they dont, it just depends. But the iphone cannot be used unless its activated, and activated does not mean unlocked.

The only way (at the moment) to unlock them is legally is by paying the company who is locked in with the iphone a fee, then it can be used with any sim card.
