Assuming you have a working SIM in the iPhone?

It might help to post a screenshot.

sounds like either your network put up some iphone detection blocker, or your IMEI is blacklisted.

I have identical problems using an o2 PAYG UK simcard (it is 3g).

I get the network not available and phone not allowed messages.

After installing ultrasn0w (0.91 - only available version I could find) I also tried a spare orange sim card I had with no luck.

When I switch it on I get a message "waiting for activation" which stays until I unlock the phone, popping up every restart.

I just bought this phone second hand so is there any way of checking if the IMEI is blacklisted (o2? police? independent organisation?)

Anyone have any other suggestions as to the cause of this?

If you bought it off someone (craigslist maybe?) it could've been stolen and the Original Owner asked the carrier to block/blacklist the IMEI. Or it was the original owner who you bought it from and they wanted to be a real ****.

    Update:

Found a site to produce a report on blacklist status
    http://www.checkmend.com/uk

Shows that the imei is blocked on one or more networks, although never reported lost or stolen. Explains the issues and a good job paypal offer buyer protection for ebay purchases.....
