Are you sure you are in DFU mode? The screen should be black (no "Connect to iTunes" logo should be visible).

i had this error last night
here what i did and it worked
i put my iphone in dfu mode and connect it to itunes
got a message saying itunes recognize a iphone in recovery mode will i like to restore now, i hit yes and it will restore and go back to the dfu mode again
so i hold down power and home button for like maybe 30 seconds and my iphone came back on with the Emergency Calls only from there i got it to restore with itunes and everything came back to normal

    hope that helps
