Apple makes billions of dollars a year. I'm quite sure they could afford a few TV spots if they wanted.

You kinda missed the point. Its not about the cost, Apple with their notorious security won't allow themselves to advertise an item that hasn't officially been unveiled. This is the same security system that kept the name of the iPad pretty much a secret right up to the day they unveilled.

When the iPhone 2G was released, it was a new thing, a smart phone with a touch screen that had mass market appeal, nothing was really on the market to compete. But now Android phones are gradually catching up to the iPhone, to the point where the tech and UI involved is now on a par with the iPhone, and in many important areas starting to become better than the iPhone 3GS. So what are Apple to do now they are behind of the game, with a new device in the final pre-production stage? allow the sales gap to narrow, and in turn loose sales. Probably not, instead if its a deliberate leak its a clever and easy way of saying "Look the new iPhone is inbound, hold on a few weeks and you'll get this...."

Apple have to do something now as they've got to maintain product momentum, without the necessary new phone model in place to keep the gravy train going.

I have two thoughts on these devices assuming they are the real deal, as I believe they are:

1st: I hope its an unfinished product, and the release it in a casing like the iPod Nano's with just as many colors available.

2nd: I can't wait to hear about how Apple hired mercenaries to invade this guys house and steal his computers :)

this is interesting... I NEVER heard of almost anything being leaked by Apple... maybe rumors and infomation rarely but actually having a prototype? I do not like the new design too much... makes it look industrial not luxury anymore... it looks thicker too, hopfully that will change but my favorite so far is the first generation design, this is similar but with out rounded bottom courners. This will be very interesting to see when its released.
