Recently the home button isn't responding on my iPhone 4. I have to press it hard or press it in a certain direction. And sometimes i have to constantly press it hard just to get out of an app. Is there something under the button or is it my phone? I've had my iPhone 4 for almost 2 years. Any help is appreciated.

This tends to be a placebo, but it's worth a try:
    1. Open any system app (eg. Weather)
    2. Hold the sleep button until the "slide to power off" is showing
    3. Release the sleep button and hold the home button until the current app exits
This should recalibrate your home button.

You can try using air compressor or something similar to blow the dust out of your phone. Using your breath is not recommended because it comes with moisture.
It still can be software related issue. Try to restore your phone to factory settings using iTunes (install as new phone) and check it the home button still not working. If home button starts to work, just restore back your data but skip settings and apps. I had the same problem with my iPhone 4S but re-install helped to solve it.

Do you often press your button hard even before this? This may be a hardware issue. There is a metal backing behind the button to keep it in place, but in certain cases, the backing may get bent due to over pressing, or just simply pressing too hard on the button. When it gets bent, button response may dwindle. You would feel yourself pressing the button, but the contact points don't touch. You have to bend it back by opening the iPhone. Would be simpler if you had the first line of iPhones that came out, since they have Philips head screws, unlike the newer Pentalobe tamper-proof screws. You can go find opening kits if you want to. Just make very sure it is a hardware issue.

You can get a few drops of 99% isopropyl alcohol on your finger and work it into the home button area, press it lots of times and then wipe off/let dry. Do this with your phone off and give it a little time to dry after. This fixed my almost non working home button on my iphone 4.

Any one should not do many more if their iPhone's any button is not working because some times a problem be a normal but with out multiple attempts it could be harmful for our iPhone. So i think if any one face these kind of problem then go for service center.
