Alright, I am eligible for an upgrade through AT&T in December. In the past, when the new iPhone comes out the preceeding generation usually goes down in price. So if this holds true I was going to buy the 3GS when the new iPhone comes out. I have heard about people buying the iPhone 3G off the AT&T online store and just activating it through iTunes and popping in their old sim card and using it without the data plan. Should this be able to work on the 3GS?

No. And it wouldn't work for others either. I tried and att disabled everything until I got an iPhone plan. I used it with a normal plan for about a month.

My friend has been doing it on his 3G since around Christmas time. You just don't call in and tell them that you have an iPhone.

I didn't. Att figured it out because their sim cards tell them what phone the sim card is in.

I see. Were you using the 3GS or 3G?
