This is regarding international characters, if you read it in context.

Yeah, but it says they are continuing to do this, so perhaps new carriers in US?

It might not mean new carriers in the US it might just mean more contries, thus more carriers out side the US. For instance here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, we have 4 carriers. All of them have the iPhone, both 3G and 3Gs are sold. Thats GSM and CDMA (using HSDPA). So it is posible it could mean more carriers in the US other then AT&T but they have a tight contract with Apple that other contries don't have.

Unless there has been a secret deal, AT&T's exclusivity deal on the iPhone ends in June this year. So if you look at the rest of the world, the model seems to be expansion onto new networks to increase sales of iPhones. There seems to be no reason why this would not apply to the US market as well. After all the US is one important market for the iPhone, so running experiments like this in other countries has proved to Apple that dropping the exclusivity deals actually increases iPhone revenues.

Although Verizon turned down the opportunity to host the iPhone originally when it was still a new device (2G) they have quite publicly more than once recently expressed that they would like to have iPhones. There has been also a lot of speculation of an improved iPhone variant made to take advantage of Verizons network.

Then theres the iPad. At the keynote unveiling SJ stated that this devices with 3G would not be network locked. Which can be seen as a side step away from AT&T.

All of this points to one thing: not just a verizon, but maybe other networks after June. Though if this comes to pass I suspect they'll not start shifting iPhones untill the 4th Gen model's available.

It's on two networks (O2 & Vodafone) over here, so it's likely to see it losing exclusivity in the US soon enough.

Similar to here in the UK: it was originally on O2, but in the past 6 months it became O2, Vodafone and Orange.
