I wasn't sure if this was better here or in the Rumors subforum, so I apologize before hand.

Anyways, it seems that the key that would allow homebrew applications to function without Apple's consent has been leaked. You can read the full story here: http://www.tuaw.com/2008/01/28/rumors-iphone-application-key-reportedly-leaked/ but the gist of it is that with the new SDK coming out, 3rd party apps could be signed without being authorized by Apple. Sounds exciting to me!

As it stands right now, the current leaked key will be useless. (You don't think Apple's going to let this one slide, do you?) It's interesting that someone managed to snag it, assuming that it is legit, but it says little about what will happen when the SDK comes out. Will they get another key, or be able to hack their way in? Who knows. It'd be nice, but we're going to have to wait this one out and see what happens next month.

the fact is that they managed to get it.
if apple just changes it, they will get it again.
so apple will face the challenge of changing everything with 1.1.4

Yea, it's too bad they released this information to the public so soon... Same with the jailbreak methods... These guys have no patience, man.

i dont belive this a key for siging app.

I belive that its the key that open the sign of the firmware. You can extract the firmware, you can decript, but if you mod some file, encript again and paquete again ituens refuse to load

But if you have access to the sign, you can change all files you want and change the sign too, so itunes acept them.

So you would upload a custom firmware with itunes to your ipod with "restore" function, maybe a custom JB firmware

All websites state that this is the "SDK Key", but hey, this might not even be any legit key at all.

    Who knows!
