In the tinyumbrella site, it says that Apple has stopped signing the 4.0 Firmwares. This means, you CANNOT save them. You should've gotten them like a week ago.
I just tried to save them now.
    No luck.
I can probably ask someone in my town for a copy

Thats wierd. I restored to 4.0 2 hours ago and it worked fine, no shsh. Do apple stop signing firmware for different devices at different times

Well, there's nothing you can do about it now but keep the jailbreak and avoid updating. Never download the update that iTunes asks to download when you sync your iPhone. If you already did, go delete it.

Only 3rd and 4th generations stop being signed by apple. I think since your iPod touch is 2nd Generation, all firmwares are still being signed.
I know that's definately the case for 1st gen but not sure about 2nd.

More like 4.0+ have started soft shsh checks. 1st gen are left out of 4.0, and that there were never shsh checks for MA and MB models. I don't know if they started signing at 4.0.1 or 4.0 :x

Nope, they're unique to each device. You can't use another devices shsh blob.
