Hey guys. I currently have an AT&T phone plan and am thinking of getting the iPhone. I heard you can replace a phone on your line. So if i am on a family plan,, can I just spend $200 and get the iPhone 4 instead of my current phone? Thanks for the help

You can't just upgrade your line for $199 at any time. It has to be at the end of the 2-year contract. You get the advertised price ($199 for a 16gb iPhone 4) only if your existing line is at the end of its two years (i.e. "eligible for upgrade"). If it has not yet reached the 2-year mark, you will have to pay more ($399) since it's an early upgrade.

    See: http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=1574#tab2

If you simulate the purchasing process through the Apple website, it will allow you to check your AT&T account to see if a line is eligible for upgrade:

    • Go to: https://buyiphone.apple.com
    • Select the iPhone 4
    • Choose "Replace a phone on my account with a new iPhone."
    • On the next screen enter the requested information that matches the individual named on the account, and it should say whether or not your account is eligible for upgrade.
    • Otherwise, just call AT&T and they'll be glad to tell you.

Will you still be required to sign up for a data plan at this point?

If you don't already have one, yes, you will be required to add a data plan to your account with the purchase of an iPhone.

If I already bought my iphone (from ebay - not through AT&T or Apple) and ask them to not put me on data, will they let me keep my simple no-texting no-data plan? I know for the phone I have now, I asked them to disable my phone from going on AT&T's MediaWeb & disable texting, to avoid any accidental charges, and they did. Can I do the same for my iPhone? I'd really just like to use it for wifi and calling only...

edit: So basically, I just want to swap my current phone with my iPhone (that I already have) and keep my current plan (no data).

Your best bet is to call and ask, so you can be sure to receive accurate information.
