    Hi,
I have recently purchased an iphone on ebay that is tied to vodaphone. The phone is 2 months old. The problem is that I dont really want to use vodaphone. I have had a look on the internet but I am not sure what to do. I think my options are:

    • offically unlock the iphone - is this possible?
    • unlock the iphone through jailbreaking - I believe I cant go back to the official firmware though afterwards?
    • Stick with vodaphone - Too expensive really.

Can someone please advise what the best thing is to do?

Also I have just got it and it is asking for me to connect to itunes. Should I do that? Or will it make it more difficult to unlock?

You'll need to find which version of the iPhone OS your 3GS is running. This will determine if you can jailbreak and then unlock your phone.

If its OS ver 3.1.3 then not a chance at the moment. 3.1.2 or older and you may well be able to do this. Theres a simple to use tool called f0recast that will tell you whats possible with your phone.

Can I connect the iphone to itunes then?

Right. I have downloaded f0recast and it says the following.

    Jailbreakable : Yes (Dont upgrade!)
    Unlockable : Yes (use blacksn0w)
Untethered : Depends if its refurbished.

It says that it currently has firmware 3.1.2 connected.

If I use blacksn0w can I then go back to the original firmware?

I think that I have got it going now : ))))))

With regard to the tethered bit. Does that mean that I have to never switch my iphone off!!!! Or is there an app that I can download which will bypass this?

Is it a 3g or a 3Gs? If it's a 3Gs then its a tethered jailbreak, meaning you can not turn it off. If you do the connect to itunes screen will appear and you have to run blackra1n again. Currently there is no way to make it an untethered jb but Geohot has an exploit to make it but will not release it prob untill the 4g iphone comes out or the 4.0 FW

    Ok. Cheers.

Is there an app which would disable the 'off' button? So that you could never turn it off.

no but just keep the phone locked and charged. If it does turn off you just have to plug it back into your computer and run blackra1n again, no big deal, just bad if your out and about.
