I'm writing this from my laptop tethered to my iPhone 3GS as I ride on a commuter train (Caltrain in the SF Bay Area, if you must absolutely know), and it's pretty awesome. I've been administering the site during the whole ride, and the connection is remarkably usable (except when going through tunnels, as expected). Just thought I'd share.

The 3Gs has almost double the connection speed I believe, the regular 3G had like 3.4mbps and the 3Gs has like 7.2 or something.

I'm a huge fan of tethering as well. I'm always on my laptop for road trips now (unless I'm driving, of course) and it's a savior at my grandparents' house where there's no WiFi.

Tethering disconnects every now and then if I'm using the USB cable.

I didn't realize how fast 3G was until I started tethering. For large downloads? Not incredible, but for web surfing, email, and most activities it is superb.

I will enjoy it while I can.

first off 3g uses 6.X mbps HSDPA, and 3gs uses 7.2HSDPA. HOWEVER, AT&T does NOT yet support the 7.2 mbps network. As of now, the 3g and 3gs use the EXACT SAME 3G NETWORK speeds. also both 3g and 3gs have identical X-GOLD chips in them, so the network speed is identical.
