    I'm on 3.1.2 + BB 5.11.07.

Should i first restore to 3.0 then jailbreak or can i keep it on the current version and will it be untethered?

No need to do that; just jailbreak with blackra1n on 3.1.2. It will be untethered. (see post below for clarification)

Sorry, I didn't clarify—iPhone 3GS units with the newer bootrom are stuck with a tethered jailbreak. My phone is an early model (from June).
