We used to be able to check iphone 3G part numbers (MB048LL/A, etc...) and whether the part numbers are locked to carriers from this apple site.

Seems like the page has changed and we can't check part numbers anymore.

I'm about to get a factory unlocked 3GS overseas. Is there any other way to check whether the 3GS part number I'm purchasing is/isn't locked to carrier?

if it is factory unlocked it means its unlocked in the hardware i believe, meaning it will use ANY network with a sim.

I'm sure you know that the part number is also printed on the box, so that we can see that first and check whether the unit is locked to a carrier.
Vendors overseas are not that "friendly" you know. Lots of scam here and there, thinking that most buyers didn't understand iphone technically.
