Something is not right with the SIM reader.

You could take it apart and check the pins in the SIM reader and see if one is bent or broken.

    Is it under warranty?

Keep the phone and try to get it to work, or send it to Apple and have them fix it.

Right now you have a damn expensive iPod!

When you got it , it had 2.2.1 without jailbreak ?
If you got it with 2.2 , restore to 2.2.1 without the BB update and then install "Yellowsn0w" from Cydia
If you got it with 2.2.1 (official) then you are screwed...

Try rebooting , remove "Yellowsn0w" , reinstall it , andtry again
