it would be helpful to specify the details of the error.

    okay.

i tried to update to 2.2, didnt work. got a 16xx error.

so the iphone was then stuck at 'connect to itunes' screen.

from there i put it in dfu mode and tried to restore to 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.2 pwnagetool.

    i always get a 16xx error?

i was thinking, what if i use pwnagetool on 2.2.1 then restore from that? then unlock it?

    thanks

so how do i fix this then? i had this problem with my ipod touch 2g but got it fixed but it wont work with the iphone? i went into dfu mode - i held power button and home button fro 10 seconds then let go of the power button and held the home button until it came up on itunes? - and when the iphone is restoring i only get the apple logo on the screen with the mac loading symbol at the bottom, then it fails and returns to the connect to itunes screen??

What is the error exactly? 16xx means nothing. What ever you do dont go past FW 2.2 and turbo-sim's are a bad idea. If you can get past this error your in good shape!

Is it 1604? Try these tips to fix the error, but what ever you do DO NOT UPGRADE TO 2.2.1!!!!!!!

Edit: Try a USB hub! I forgot about that.

Ok just try the fixes in the link I gave. One of them will work eventually. I had both of those errors before and it took me awhile to figure it out. There is no one universal fix for 1600+ errors though, they could be caused by a few different things.

I have a feeling you have a phone with a 5.8 bootloader, but to be safe stay away from 2.2.1 for now and once you get it jailbroken and unlocked follow these instructions to check the bootloader.

If it a 5.8 then you are in good great shape and can always downgrade the baseband.

    Try apples fixes. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275

I remember now what fixed it for me. I had to unplug everything from the USB ports, restart the computer and when it was fully booted I plugged them back in and it restored fine.
