I recently received an iPhone 3G from a friend. It was JB and unlocked with 3.1.2 so I decided to update it to iOS4. Upon restoring I came across a message that stated "I needed to insert a valid SIM with no pin lock to activate phone."

    Here's the problem:
I have T-Mobile. Do not have an AT&T SIM card and because of the area I live very few people have AT&T phones.
I've been looking for a way to bypass the activation and the only thing I've found so far is that jailbreaking with redsn0w will bypass activation.
I tried it 5 times: Fail.
So basically the question is, is there a legit, proven way to bypass activation or do I just have to wait until I find a person with an AT&T SIM that will let me take it to the nearest iTunes + internet to activate my iPhone?

Buy a phonebook simcard, you can get it from some shops or ebay. It will activate using one of those.

Are you on 4.0,4.0.1,4.0.2 or 4.1?

I'm trying to find a faster way than ordering a SIM, if possible?
But if I must as a last resort, I will.

Downgrade back to 3.1.3 and use Redsn0w. Otherwise I don't see why Redsn0w is not working for you. What FW and version of Redsn0w are you using

    1) redsnow 0.9.5 beta5 is VERY buggy on iPhone 3G - data/wifi is broken and cydia doesn't work out -.-

    2) you've upgraded your baseband = no unlock for you possible, ultrasn0w doesn't support the 4.1 baseband, sorry

    3) conclusion: you're stuck with you iPhone 3G - even if you can jailbreak it in the near future there is still no unlock available (nor in sight)

PS: downgrading the firmware doesn't downgrade the baseband

The iPhone was unlocked when i got the phone, and i used it for about a week before cydia crashed a couple times. So thats why I upgraded the firmware.
Is there a way to downgrade the baseband?
