Right my 3G is old and it was jailbroken and it had had a good life, until wham one day it splashed down in the toilet. So i did the whole rice trick and to no real avail, what happens now is that it shows the apple logo on booting (only while plugged in) flashes after a while then turns itself off and it vibrates all the time, as soon as i plug it in or try pressing buttons it does that. So i tried to put into hardware DFU mode and i got the the computer to recognize the device and then itunes gave me the restore option so i went restore thinking 'yes im getting there' and it was preparing the iphone for restore then the USB disconnect noise came and it continued to say preparing the phone for restore so i assumed i'd imagined it, then after a while it gave the error 1601 and couldn't do it, any possible fixes or similar experiences for this guys?

You shouldn't have turned it on.

i dropped it in the toilet months ago, it had been drying in the rice box for weeks but im now wondering if there is an irrecoverable hardware issue or not

Yeah, I'd recommend drying it for a while, re-install iTunes, and see what happens after that..

What my question is... How on Earth did you manage to drop it down the toilet!? O_O

a 1601 is ussually a common error... try booting it out of recovery mode... change usb port and cord is possible... i think itunes recognises it as a faulty USB, but it could be internal hardware that the USB can not talk :-/
