My dad gave me his old iPhone 3G on 3.1 because he got the 3GS. He took the sim card out. I am looking to activate it but I cant find a working tutorial for 3.1 and I know this may be a noob question but I am new to this

Easiest thing would be to use any SIM card from an official carrier; AT+T here in the U.S.

It does not have to be an active SIM but it does have to be an official carrier. Put the SIM in and plug it in; it will attempt to go through the activation process and the first thing it does is unlock the activation screen. You can eject and unplug the iPhone before it does anything and I have never had a problem with it.

So is that the only way? I prefer to not use a sim card because I dont really have one around.

Just borrow your dad's for a split second, activate it, then take it out and give it bak to him. It wont mess anything up.

Good idea. But he left for a business trip 2 days ago and wont be back for another 1 1/2 weeks. Am I going to have to wait that long? Or is there a quickpwn or something I can use?

Get one from an AT&T store; Pay-as-you-Go. No personal information asked, and you get service for a month for $10. Easiest way.

    Pay-as-you-go.

But I believe they blocked it under official firmware.

all of the above posts are pointless because the man has stated he doesnt have a sim card, and probably doesn't want to use it as a phone for now.
the only way to activate it without a sim card is through a jailbreak, which at the moment can only be with a custom firmware made by pwnage tools. Unfortunately, if you dont have a mac computer, you wont be able to use pwnage tools.. and if you're desperate and think that you can go to the apple store and make the custom firmware there.. think again, i tried it, and failed, as it asked for a password lol
