Well, you are absolutely right. Let's stuff a camera, some USB ports and a number of other slots in all of that extra space. Hmm, while we are at it, let's stuff in an HDD, get a hardware keyboard in there as well. Oh no, wait, let's also put in a mouse because, you know, what computer does not have a mouse, right? Hmm, still too much space. I know, let's stuff in a PC motherboard! Oh hey, still enough room for PC CPU and PC RAM! Wait, I think we need more storage too, so... let's put in an HDD! Wait, we already did that... Oh wait a minute, I think I'll need a refrigerator in there, too. To cool the device and my drinks, you know.

...you know, even if there is plenty of space inside, you don't necessarily have to stuff everything in... And as it is, the iPad is already very prone to water damage. More slots or openings for water to get in is a big no no in my opinions. If you really want a USB port or an SD card reader, the camera connection kit is a godsend. Not like you have to plug and unplug a USB drive in and out of the device that often anyway.

The reason for the empty space is for heat dissipation, means they need no kind of fan or anything since it seems that it runs pretty hot.

Yeah right... because air is known to be such a great heat-conductor.
