Basically. Possible, but very impractical. I think the battery life would suffer more from the load put on the hardware than the actual power consumption of the screen, which wouldn't be much higher anyway. And then there are problems with cost, heat from the high hardware load, performance issues, etc.

But that doesn't say much anyway. There are mobile processors and chips out there/released that could perform as fast as our current laptops. It is just very impractical to use.

With the same logic you could have a $500 laptop as powerful as a $500 desktop, and it goes on like that.

Like I said before, Apple is most likely going to stick with the 1024x768 resolution, but make the screen a bit smaller so that the pixel density is a tad bit higher.

There's no point in introducing yet another resolution for developers to re-do their apps in, considering the fact that the transition from 320x480 to 960x640 (and 1024x768) is still slowly-but-surely happening.

They won't change the screen size.

Except Steve Jobs is, as we speak, plotting the destruction of 7 inch tablets.

What you are saying won't happen. I've done the math (look for it in a FP post soon), and the result is very little.

why in the world would they change the screen size when Jobs himself has gone on record saying the ipad has been optimized for that screen size, otherwise users don't get the right experience on it. i don't know where you're coming from with that, but it's not going to happen at all. that conclusion sounds like the cheapest way to do a better screen resolution, which isn't "the apple way."

The Retina Display wasn't deployed to make it impossible to distinguish pixels.
It was made to make reading text on it easier on the eyes and give a clearer picture.

The iPad is already easy on the eyes because the text is so much bigger.

The resolution WILL eventually change. It just won't change anytime soon.
The 27" iMac requires a constant power connection to run. Our mobile technology today can't handle that.
