I downgraded my iphone 3g to 3.1.3 from 4.0, but the problem I have is that the only backup I have of my iphone 3g is from the 4.0 version. Due to this iTunes wont allow me to sync my backup to my 3.1.3 and thus not being able to retrieve contacts or notes. I would very much appreciate a way around this because I really want to be on 3.1.3 but still have my contacts. Thanks.

I got the ipsw from some site I forgot, went to iTunes and set iphone into dfu mode. Shift click restore selected ipsw file, it somehow verified with apple and began restoring. Though before it finished it came up with an error message(I believe it was 1015) so I went and booted up black rain and pressed make it ra1n which didn't jailbreak, but instead put my iphone into a black screen mode. I forced the iphone off(home and power for 5-7 seconds), and restarted it. When it rebooted it showed the connect to itunes to activate screen. I connected and activated it and to my surprise it was now on 3.1.3.

I was actually just reading an article saying it wasnt possible to restore the backup from 4.0, but there are programs out there that can edit iphone backups. If you could get one of those you could just take the info you needed from the 4.0 backup and put it on a 3.1.3 backup. Ive never actually tried that but i dont see why it wouldnt work.

    Well heres what I did.
    1. Jailbroke my iphone 3g 4.0.1
    2. SSHed the address book onto my mac
    3. Downgraded to 3.1.3 and jailbroke
    4. SSHed into that(3.1.3 iphone) and dragged those two addressbook files over replacing the existing.
    5. Changed the permissions to 0775 and then tried 0777 after that, but neither ended up showing the contacts on the phone.
    Any suggestions?

The address book app folder does not contain the data.
